Solid academic programs and lessons in good sportsmanship skills are continuing to boost participation in trapshooting, among college age students.  iTrapshooter.com checked in with Fort Hays State University in Kansas, whose shooting program has been going strong since it began in 2005.

“It’s grown exponentially,” Dr. Duane Shepherd, Associate Professor at the University said. “Collegiate sports are the next frontier.”

An avid sportsman, Dr. Shepherd listened when he first heard that a few students at the university wanted to form a shooting team.  He made it his responsibility to form a skill development program in 2005 and from that point on, it’s been a steady climb upward.

Students at FHSU can participate in competitive or recreational trapshooting.  All who show an interest are welcomed in to the program, providing they are willing to spend the time and embrace the club’s philosophy.

“There is equal opportunity for men and women.  We want the students to learn how to run a club, be ambassadors for the sport, and represent the university at the highest level,” Dr. Shepherd said. “We’re very big on developing and maintaining a very positive image of Collegiate shooting sports. People don’t realize how positive the shooting sports can be.”

The FHSU team members invest their time heavily in the local community, typically devoting more than 800 hours to volunteer work during the school year.

“I’m very proud of them,” Dr. Shepherd said.

In addition to volunteering within the community, the students also hold fundraisers to help defray the costs involved in practicing and competing.

“Philosophically, I want a lot of people to have the opportunity shoot as competitively as possible.  Unfortunately we always run in to financial issues,” Dr. Shepherd said.

Participation in State shoots are funded through grants with some matching funds provided by the University.  The FHSU Trap Team has attended ATA shoots in six states including Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming.
“The team shoots very, very well.  They are a very highly competitive group.  And they are really are good ‘kids’ who represent shooting sports very well. Very impressive,” Dr. Shepherd said.
