ITrapshooter.com:  You’ve said the wind is your friend.

Britt:  It really is in a way.  In the late 90’s some friends got me in to shooting bench rifles.  They have the national  bench rifle shoot in the middle of Odessa; it’s about 120 miles from us, south.  Okay, the wind blows right here about ten times more than it does  anywhere else.  The people from back east and out west, they’re used to shooting without too much wind.  I won one of them, I should’ve won both of them, but the dirt was blowing so bad you couldn’t see .

(In trapshooting), they used to let you test fire in the ground, you know, you could shoot one before you ever started the round.  One time while at Tucson, there was a direct cross wind from right to left and from the 27 and I know about where I break a target.  Boom, you can shoot the ground and I could see how far the pattern moved.   It drifts.  The wind’s going to move a shot pattern, I already knew that when I got to the rifle shooting.

Anyway, we were there shooting one time and Kay Ohye was shooting with us and one of the guys from Amarillo.  All of them were 27 yard line shooters. We shot the first trap and it’s about a 40-something mile an hour wind, I mean straight right to left, one of them good old days when you wish you could go in and play hearts. Anyway, I think I had like a 23 or something on the first trap.  All of those guys, Kay Ohye, all of them, they all had something lower.  Well I know our lead off guy had a 15, Kay Ohye and them might have had an 18 or 19.  (One of the guys) walked over to me and said, “what are you doing?”   And I said, “what do you mean?”.  And he said, “well how do you shoot that, what are you doing different?”.  And I said, “well like if I’m on five and you get a straight away, you gotta shoot to the right side of it, because if you shoot at it you’re going to be way to the left”.  They said, “aw that wind’s not blowing that much”, and I said, “ok, well you asked”.  So I said, “if you’re on post 3 and you get a straight away you better shoot to the right side of it or you’re going to miss it”.  Anyway, I ended up with a 94 that day, Kay Ohye had a 69, that guy had a 55.  I think after I showed Earl (Scripture) and told him what was going on he had like a high 70.  How do you explain that to people if they don’t shoot in it all the time.

iTrapshooter.com:  It goes back to practice doesn’t it?

Britt:  Like the old man that got me into shooting the bench rifles said, if you get ready to go shoot, go shoot.  Don’t pick a real pretty day, where it stands still, everybody can shoot groups on that.  If the wind’s blowing, go, because he said a lot of people can’t shoot a little bitty group if the winds blowing.  And it’s the truth.
